In Fly to Space, written by Hasara Nishshanka, adventures take place in the wide, mysterious outer space, with the stars coming together to tell stories about your child. The moral is that your child will come away feeling unique and special, just like one of the stars they read about. Feel free to go outside or peek out the window to notice the big expanse of sky right above your heads, thus cementing the feeling that they matter in this large world.  

In Into the Beautiful Ocean, illustrated by Enkelana and Geraldina Mehmeti by explore oceanic life from the comfort of your bed–again– and discover coral reefs, colorful fish, seaweed forests, and abandoned ships. Your child will be able to explore their own adventure and have fun doing so. They can deepen their appreciation for ocean life and grow a fondness for the ocean while learning about it too. 

In Mysteries of the Red Planet, your child can explore space in their own adventure. They can discover more about the incredible nature of their planet and the planets that surround us, by learning about space, science, and the beauty of human life. The mystery keeps them hooked and by the end, they’ll be begging to stargaze.

Here are some ways you can make reading time a little easier:

• Set a consistent reading time with your child. Bedtime always works, but you can also choose morning times before school and right after waking to get them pumped for the day. 
• Create a space devoted to reading time. You can make this space really comfy with pillows and blankets, and a stack of books that your child loves. 
• Reading is a two-way street. As you talk, pause and ask questions. See if your child has questions about the character or see what part they’re really enjoying. It can be an interactive and visual learning experience as well. 
• Choose a story that resonates with your child and also is age-appropriate in themes, language, vocabulary, diversity, and objectives aligned with their current area of study. 

Remember that their attention span isn’t huge, so expect their attention for about 10-12 minutes and once they’re tired–it’s not going to be as fun as you’d hoped. No worries though–breaks are natural and a focused time of study is better than a longer period of non-focus. 

As many of us know, Ukraine is currently experiencing an illegal invasion of its land on behalf of the Russian imperialist regime, led by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. The book is Illustrated and Written by Ukrainian Artists and International friends. The book is called Ukrainian Angels and is a non-profit personalized children’s book benefiting the authors’s heritage and proceeds go back to the people of Ukraine. 

By presenting the Ukrainian Angels book on Vinapa, we are giving a voice to those who are under attack and may not be able to afford to express themselves, due to the threat of violence or death. With beautiful line drawings and wonderful watercolor art by multiple Ukrainian artists, the book tells the story of Ukraine as they see it now–in devastation, but also the hope that can come from the ashes. The work was created in war-torn Ukraine in subpar environments that were unsafe, uninspiring, cold, wet, and cramped. In spite of these conditions, the writer and illustrators came together to create a work of art that could reach children and their parents to provide a well-rounded picture of what’s really going on in the country today. In dark bomb shelters, came the light of this book, Ukrainian Angels–shedding hope and faith that tomorrow will be a better day, full of peace and reform.

Licensed clinical psychologists state that secure attachment is the foundation of all future relationships, self-worth, resilience, self-regulation of emotions, and meaningful connections. The interactions a child had with their parents in the early years promote secure attachment due to both verbal and nonverbal communication that’s occurring. When a child feels safe and secure around a parent or anybody, they’re more likely to learn better, grow in intelligence, and have healthier relationships.  

Based on the findings of the American Academy of Pediatrics, statistics show that reading encourages brain development and allows a strong, emotional bond to develop between parents and their children. Reading at home and fostering that habit has a great impact on the quality of their home life and relationships. 

Staying present while a parent reads to their child is also critical to the success of the reading time. As the parent reads, they’re narrating the emotions and spectrum of feelings t that the characters are going through, and surely, your child will as well. Discussing the characters’ feelings and how they go through their challenges can display empathy to your child and help them to feel compassion for others. Stimulating their compassion and empathy can encourage them to feel better about their own self-expression. 

• Get to know the book well and preview it before you read, so you can ensure that it’s something your child will enjoy as well. 
• What do you want the children to learn? Leading with objectives going into reading time can make the session more interactive. Think: what concepts do you want to delve into? What vocab do you need to go over? What questions remain in the open? 
• Don’t judge a book by its cover, but definitely examine it. Go over what the child sees and present the cover for discussion. Predicting what the story is about might get them more interested in finding out what happens between the pages. 
• Discuss the roles of the author and illustrator. How do they work together? Where are they from? Maybe you could compare your child to the creators to show how your child is also a writer and illustrator. 
• Discussing the structure and make of a physical book can be fascinating to young children. Examine the spine, the pages, and the front and back of the book. Do your research to discover how books are created and sum up the process for your child. 
• Track the lines of the book with your finger or a writing utensil to help your child follow along easier.
• Make sure to pause between big moments and reflect. Ask questions to your child and see what kind of answers they come up with.
